CP OPTIMIZER STARTUP DISK
=========================
To fully optimize your normal startup volume, restart your Macintosh from the floppy disk labeled MacTools Disk #5. Depending on your upgrade MacTools Deluxe selection, MacTools Disk #5 is either an:
- 800K, System 6 Optimizer startup disk
or
- 1.44MB, System 7 Optimizer startup disk
Otherwise, MacTools Disk #5 is a 1.44MB, System 7 Optimizer startup disk.
Depending on your additional needs, the Build Optimizer Disk application will create either type of Optimizer startup disk. To install the Build Optimizer Disk application, insert MacTools Disk #1, open CP Installer, and click What. If you have already installed MacTools Version 2, checkmark the Build Optimizer Disk application only and install it on your volume. To use the Build Optimizer Disk application, you will need a floppy disk formatted as follows:
- 800K to create a System 6 Optimizer startup disk
or
- 1.44MB to create a System 7 Optimizer startup disk
Launch the application and follow the instructions that appear.
System administrators can copy MacTools Disk #5 or create CP Optimizer startup disks and distribute them to licensed users.
COMPATIBILITY ISSUES
====================
System Software
---------------
Central Point recommends using the System 7 MacTools Emergency Disk, in case you have any compressed System 7 files on your Macintosh. If you do not have a high-density (1.44MB) drive, use the System 6 (800K) MacTools Emergency Disk.
DiskDoubler/AutoDoubler
--------------------------
Unlike other disk analysis applications, CP DiskFix checks bundle bits in files compressed using either DiskDoubler or AutoDoubler formats. Disk analysis is faster using the AutoDoubler compression format.
Before checking files that have been compressed with DiskDoubler/AutoDoubler, CP Anti-Virus decompresses the files. Therefore, checking compressed files for viruses may take longer than checking files that are not compressed.
SoundMaster
-------------
If you use SoundMaster, make sure it is the most current version (1.7.3 or newer). You may still experience problems with SoundMaster, especially when using sounds that require a large amount of RAM. If you have less than 3 MB of RAM, change SoundMaster's name so it loads after all other Control Panels.
Non-ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) Keyboards
------------------------------------
CP DriveLight may not flash the scroll lock and num lock lights on a non-ADB keyboard. If you use a non-ADB keyboard, change the CP DriveLight Control Panel options so the CP DriveLight appears onscreen (in the menu bar).
Scroll2
--------
Scroll2 randomly moves the displayed location of the scroll bar arrows in CP Mirror and CP Anti-Virus Control Panel Help windows. To scroll the window, click where the scroll bar arrows would have been.
INSTALLING MACTOOLS
======================
System 7 Tune-Up
----------------
Apple is aware that a small number of customers have experienced occurrences of disappearing folders with System 7.0 and 7.0.1. Apple has investigated this issue and identified the problem and a solution. Included with this product is the Apple System 7 Tune-Up version 1.1.1, which provides a preventative solution to this problem. To install the Apple System 7 TuneUp version 1.1.1, click What on the main Installer window and select the System 7 Tune Up.
CP DiskFix repairs System 7 volumes with folders that have disappeared.
Password Protection
-------------------
In addition to anti-virus software, turn off all password protection software and disk locking programs before installing MacTools Version 2.
Control Panels and Extensions
---------------------------
If you encounter problems installing MacTools, drag and use CP Installer from your hard disk. Otherwise, disable the following Control Panels and Extensions to avoid any possible conflicts:
After Dark™ (if used with Word Finder® Plus™)
Wallpaper™
Thunder 7™
Icon Colorizer
If you continue to have conflicts with Control Panels and Extensions, turn off all Extensions and try to install again. To turn off Extensions:
If you have System 7, hold down the Shift key while you restart.
or
If you have System 6.x, drag Control Panels and INITs out of the System Folder and restart. After installing MacTools 2, drag the Control Panels and INITs back to the System Folder.
CPS Preferences File
-------------------
If you still experience problems during installation, delete the CPS Preferences file from the System Folder and try again.
CP Installer
-----------
During installation, CP Installer does not prompt you to insert Disk #5; it does prompt you for the Emergency Disk.
File Groupings and Locations
--------------------------
Installation of some MacTools applications results in several files being placed on your computer. The following list indicates groupings of files used by each application, where the original file can be found, and where the files are stored on your computer after installation is complete.
This list assumes use of System 7. If you use System 6.x, files are placed in the main System Folder. System 6.x does not use separate Preferences, Control Panels, and Extensions folders inside the System Folder.
The default location for each file is given. You can choose to install all files in the MacTools Folder, however files whose default destination is the System Folder will not function until they are placed in the System Folder as shown below.

** MacTools does not install these files by default. To install them, click What and make your selection manually.
CP DiskFix
----------
Use CP Installer to copy CP DiskFix and CP Optimizer to your hard disk. Otherwise, CP Installer cannot:
- Install the CP DiskFix Animation
- Reset CP DiskFix memory size to 1.5MB from 4MB
- Reset CP Optimizer memory size to 1MB from 4MB
(CP DiskFix and CP Optimizer use 4MB when you start your Macintosh from the MacTools Emergency Disk or Optimizer startup disk.)
SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR TIPS
==========================
The default settings in the CP Anti-Virus Control Panel provide the minimum amount of virus protection. Select additional options to suit your needs.

MACTOOLS 2.0 AND OTHER APPLICATIONS ======================================
Other data recovery utilities may produce less comprehensive results than CP FileFix and CP DiskFix. The following information explains how CP FileFix and CP DiskFix check for a bundle bit and dates.
Bundle Bit
----------
If a file has a bundle resource, CP FileFix and CP DiskFix will set the bundle bit if you select the file to be fixed. Do not select files if you want to leave the bundle bit unset.
Dates
-----
CP FileFix and CP DiskFix check and cross-check the creation, modification, and backup dates for files. For example, if the modification date is earlier than the creation date, CP FileFix and CP DiskFix change the modification date to the current date.
3-D DISPLAY
===========
If you use a black-and-white and a color monitor simultaneously, 3-D Display is only available when the front window is on a monitor set for 256 colors or shades of grey.
REPORTING
==========
Viewing Reports
---------------
To view reports created by MacTools applications, launch the application and choose Show Report from the File menu.
Printing Reports
---------------
To print a report, show the report and then choose Print Report from the File menu.
MacTools Emergency Disk and Optimizer Startup Disk
-------------------------------------------------
When you start your Macintosh from the MacTools Emergency Disk or Optimizer startup disk and want to change and save option preferences, instead of the original floppy disk, use an unlocked copy.
When you start your Macintosh from the Optimizer startup disk and want to save report information, choose Save Report As from the File menu. Select a location other than the Optimizer startup disk, if the floppy disk is locked.
CPS MACINTOSH COMPUSERVE FORUM
=================================
After July 1, 1992, access the Central Point Software Macintosh CompuServe Forum by calling your local CompuServe access number, then from the ! prompt, type GO CPSMAC
CP DISKFIX
==========
Password Protection
-------------------
Turn off any active password protection before running CP DiskFix.
If you have a partition that is password-protected, and you start your Macintosh from the MacTools Emergency Disk, make sure you enter the correct password for the partition.
SCSI Bus Scan
-------------
Before performing a SCSI bus scan for removable media (for example, Syquest cartridges), remove the SCSI driver Extension from the System Folder and the cartridge from the drive before starting your Macintosh.
The Scan SCSI Bus command on the CP DiskFix menu analyzes SCSI devices that have 512 byte sectors. Most SCSI hard drives use 512 byte sectors. Many SCSI optical drives use sectors larger than 512 bytes.
Ejectable Media
--------------
When recovering files from ejectable media (for example, floppy disks), be sure to recover all the files you want before ejecting the media to avoid a second scan.
Analyzing a Volume
------------------
Always allow CP DiskFix to complete a volume analysis before launching or using another application.
Recovering Files
---------------
If you have only one disk drive, you can recover files from a floppy disk to the hard disk, or from the hard disk to a floppy disk. However, you cannot recover files from one floppy disk to another floppy disk on a Macintosh with a single floppy disk drive.
When recovering files to a combination of empty and partially full floppy disks, you can minimize the number of split files if you insert empty floppy disk first and partially full floppy disks last.
Insert a floppy disk for analysis and repair only after you close the Recover Files window. When the Recover Files window is open, CP DiskFix will not analyze or repair other volumes.
Skip Button
-----------
The CP DiskFix repair window now has a Skip button rather than an Ignore button.
CP UNDELETE
===========
800K Scan
----------
To recover files on an 800K floppy disk, select the floppy disk on the main CP Undelete window and choose 800K Scan from the CP Undelete menu. This method scans 800K floppy disks for tag bytes, which contain information about any file in a sector. This information changes when the file is changed and CP Undelete uses the information to recover a file. Because CPS Tag Fix is now part of CP Mirror, 800K Scan is most effective if you install CP Mirror before placing the files on the floppy disk.
Unused Space
------------
When CP Undelete scans for files, it tries to recover the maximum amount of data. Occasionally, CP Undelete may recover unused space because characters in this area match a document type. To avoid this, deselect document types that you do not use.
CP FILEFIX
==========
Word 5
------
CP FileFix works with most Word 5 files.
DiskDoubler
------------
If you compressed Word or Excel files with DiskDoubler, use DiskDoubler to decompress the files before extracting data with CP FileFix.
Password Protection
-------------------
CP FileFix can only Recover data from damaged Excel files if you remove all password-protection before you Check them.
Scan for Text Only
-----------------
The Scan for text only option extracts ASCII characters. Turn on this option and try again if your first Extract try is unsuccessful.
CP MIRROR CONTROL PANEL
========================
When you change the size of the Delete Tracking file, CP Mirror reduces use of disk space by removing the existing Delete Tracking file before creating a new one. If there is not enough disk space to create the new Delete Tracking file, backup and delete any unused files until you have enough space to create the new Delete Tracking file.
CP BACKUP
==========
Deleting CP Backup Files
----------------------
The Delete CPS Backup files option automatically checks the folder you are backing up to and deletes files in this folder that are in Central Point format. If you do not back up to a folder, the Delete CPS Backup files option checks the root level of the destination volume and deletes files in Central Point format.
The Delete CPS Backup files option deletes only MacTools Version 2.0 CPS Backup files. It does not delete backup files created with an earlier version of Backup in MacTools Deluxe.
The Delete all files option automatically deletes all data on the destination floppy disk or tape before backing up to it, including backup files created with an earlier version of Backup in MacTools Deluxe. However, this option does not overwrite locked backup files.
Auto Format
-----------
The Auto Format All Volumes option formats the destination floppy disk or tape automatically before backing up to it. For your protection, this option never formats hard drives or cartridges.
Scheduling a CP Backup
---------------------
If you schedule CP Backup to run at shutdown, the backup occurs only if your Macintosh has enough memory. To be sure that your Setup file works correctly and that your files get backed up, make sure a scheduled backup works before running CP Backup automatically.
To track the results of a backup, set the reporting options to print automatically.
Setup Files
----------
You can create and save a Setup file without selecting files or a destination volume. Before backing up with the Setup file, make sure you select files to back up and specify a destination volume.
PC Format Floppy Disks
---------------------
If you have utility software such as Access PC or DOS Mounter, and want to backup to floppy disks formatted for a PC, before starting the backup, turn off the utility software or reformat the floppy disks in Macintosh format.
Estimates
---------
Backup estimates for the number of floppy disks, tapes, hard disk space, and time needed are approximations that combine many variables. Because exact resolution of some variables (for example, partially full floppy disks) is not possible beforehand, estimates may vary from actual.
Macintosh Device Driver Files
----------------------------
Unlike other backup applications, CP Backup checks for Macintosh Device Driver files or any file using their convention of beginning the file name with a period. When found, CP Backup gives you the option to Skip the file or Cancel the backup. CP Backup logs the error in the report file.
Compare
-------
Files that change during a backup (such as the Backup report file) will not match during a Compare.
Hardware Compression
--------------------
Before you back up to a device that supports hardware compression, turn off CP Backup Data Compression.
Software Compression
--------------------
If you use AutoDoubler/DiskDoubler to compress files, use one of the following methods, depending on how quickly you want to back up and whether the compression program is available when you rstore files.
Method 1
This method backs up files more quickly than Method 2. However, if you restore the backed-up files, AutoDoubler/DiskDoubler must be available on your Macintosh because the restored files are still in AutoDoubler/DiskDoubler compressed format.
Before starting the backup, turn off AutoDoubler/DiskDoubler and the Compress Backup Data option in the Expert Options dialog box.
Method 2
This method backs up files more slowly than Method 1, but when you restore the files, you do not need AutoDoubler/DiskDoubler because the backed-up files are in CP Backup compressed format.
Before starting the backup, turn on AutoDoubler/DiskDoubler and select the Compress Backup Data option in the Expert Options dialog box. When the backup begins, the compression program first decompresses the files, and then CP Backup compresses and backs up the files.
Custom Icons
------------
CP Backup restores custom icons for files to their original locations. However, CP Backup does not restore custom icons for folders and volumes because these icons are stored as separate, invisible files.
CP ANTI-VIRUS
==============
A status of "unknown" in the CP Anti-Virus Report could mean that a file has bad blocks. Use CP DiskFix to examine the drive and mark any bad blocks.
CP OPTIMIZER
============
Guidelines
---------
Follow these guidelines before you use CP Optimizer to optimize a volume (if they apply to your situation):
1. Turn off any active password protection.
2. Unlock all volumes.
3. Use your partitioning software to turn off any soft partitions that mount automatically.
Volume Map
----------
If a file with a resource and a data fork has fragmentation in one of the forks only, the size displayed in the fragmented files list may differ from its actual size and the file may appear twice in the volume map.
The volume map approximates data on a volume. Some blocks at the beginning or end of a color group may represent more than one file. When you point to a block on the map, CP Optimizer identifies the file that has more fragmentation. This does not affect the optimization.
Volume Analysis
---------------
If CP Optimizer detects a problem with your drive, rebuild the Desktop and run CP DiskFix. To rebuild the Desktop, press and hold the Command and Option keys while starting your Macintosh.
Optimizing
----------
If you cannot optimize your disk because there is not enough disk space, try selecting different Move Files To and Arrange Files By options.
CP SCHEDULER EXTENSION
=======================
CP Backup and CP DiskFix use the CP Scheduler Extension to run automatically under System 7 or System 6.x using MultiFinder. To schedule a CP Backup or CP DiskFix session for the first time, save your settings in a Setup file, open the CP Scheduler window, load a Setup file, and select the option preferences you want.
CP DRIVELIGHT CONTROL PANEL
============================
If you have an Extended Keyboard and have CP DriveLight flash the scroll lock and num lock lights, you may experience a slowdown in mouse cursor movements during heavy disk activity. This activity causes delays by using available cycles on the Apple DeskTop Bus (ADB).
MANUAL
=======
The following text is missing from the top of page 25:
Catalog: Checks the volume's file and directory structure. If damaged, files or folders may lose data or disappear from the desktop. If you turn on this option, the Volume Information Block, Volume Bitmap, and Extents options turn on automatically.
